Welcome to the market

I chose to use flowers as the main subject of my film and subsequent website as they are intimately connected to and representative of the human experience. Flowers can act as markers for the most monumental and insignificant moments in life, roses at weddings, chrysanthemums at funerals and a flower representative for everything in between. The cycle of a flower is also similar to its human counterparts, they live and they die but in-between they need to achieve the perfect balance of sunlight and hydration to thrive without this balance they will suffer. A balance is also a requirement of good health in people.

Making this film at the end of February and beginning of March signalled a transition from Winter to Spring. This transition, as argued by my mother needed to be commemorated with fresh flowers, and so began our trip to the renowned Columbia Road flower market.

With this trip to the flower market, I had hoped to gain an understanding of how people chose what type of flowers they were going to buy, was it based on reason? Or instinct? Or a combination of the two?
